Understanding and Managing your Behavioral Threat Assessment Protocol in Schools

Join SSAC in welcoming one of the nation’s most sought-after speakers in the field of both Bullying and Behavioral Threat Assessment, Dr. Scott Poland.  This dynamic session containing actual school-based case studies will provide the school safety practitioner with the skills needed to both understand the complex nature of behavioral threat assessment but also understand the complexities involved in managing your agency’s/district’s policies and protocol.  Dr. Poland will share some of the legalities often times many school districts are forced to address during their prevention and response to critical incident threats.  In today’s real world of increased threats to schools and communities, this is not a session you will want to miss.

Deputy Chief AJ DeAndrea & Madelena DeAndrea

DARK NIGHTS OF THE SOUL; WHEN TERROR HITS

Deputy Chief AJ DeAndrea (Ret) was in a leadership role in three school shootings that changed the fabric of American society and police response to active shootings around the world. He takes a deep dive into these tragic events and more importantly analyzes the positive things that came from them in decision making, improved tactics, and mental health practices. He is accompanied by his oldest daughter, Madalena DeAndrea, who survived the Borderline active shooting incident in Thousand Oaks, CA in 2018. Madalena, a current Senior Manager of Strategic Projects, Recovery, and Resiliency with Jeffco Public Schools Department of School Safety in Colorado shares how the protective factors she learned growing up the daughter of a lifelong law enforcement officer, ultimately saved her life. She shares her insights as a survivor of an active shooter, and her choice to experience post-traumatic growth following an experience of evil. This keynote culminates in an opportunity for audience questions if time allows
